Coffee is one of my comfort foods…it’s rich, it’s warm, and it always hits the spot. I recently stopped in at Impero Coffee’s second location in Grove City, which is often called their “Roast Place”, to grab a cup of something delicious. Their original location in the Short North has served customers since 2009, and is a very popular coffee house in that area. Not too long ago, they opened this West side shop and it’s here that they roast their beans in small, 10-pound batches to ensure freshness.
Impero sources their coffee beans from places like Ethiopia, Sumatra, Brazil, Papua New Guinea, and other various locations from all over the planet. These beans were stacked against the wall, just waiting to be roasted and consumed.
The Grove City location is home to Impero’s impressive coffee roaster. The process begins with beans in the unroasted, green stage, and can involve anywhere from 5-6 additional stages, depending on what type of roast they are creating. The aroma in the shop was amazing, and I was hoping to see the roasting in process, but I believe I had just missed it.
The shop itself was very clean and comfortable, and the dim lighting gave it a very casual feel. Ordering takes place at a large, dark wooden counter, where you can stand watch the baristas at work while they are making your drink. There are just a few, high-top tables for those who want to hang out for a while.
In contrast, the front of the house is bright and cheery, thanks in part to the large windows on two sides. Its simple & serene decor, along with a couple of comfy couches, offer a relaxed mood in which you can sit and sip.
Impero offers many of your standard coffee shop items, specialty drinks, and more, plus some breakfast & lunch food. They offer what’s referred to as 3rd Wave Coffee, which is a product of careful roasting and brewed by processes such as Chemex’s, pour-overs and French presses.
One of the drinks I’ve recently been introduced to is the Iced Chai Latte ($3.75). I call it Christmas in a cup. It’s smooth, and tastes like liquid gingerbread (at least that was my wife’s description of it). It was very refreshing and tasty.
The Mrs. ordered a hot Turtle Mocha Latte ($3.75), and enjoyed it very much. It was rich, creamy and chocolaty, and had a hint of pecan nuttiness. She kept going on about how wonderful it tasted.
Impero Coffee Roasters is definitely a solid choice for the casual coffee drinker who’s looking for a morning pick-me-up, or for the coffee connoisseur who enjoys coffee that is roasted to perfection. The Baristas are friendly, knowledgeable and willing to make your coffee just the way you want it. Check them out the next time your comfort food craving kicks in.
