I recently had the pleasure of being invited back for a second visit to the radio studios of True Oldies QT 1270 AM in Marysville, and chatted it up on their morning show, with hosts, Angie & Marty. We discussed breakfast in and around Columbus and Central Ohio, and I talked about some of my recent visits to Union County’s best breakfast spots. During the interview, Angie asked me if I had the chance to check out Bagel Island, which is literally just around the corner from the studio. I told her that I hadn’t, so she sent Marty & me on a mission: we were to head over to Bagel Island, grab some bagels, and bring them back to the studio in order to perform my first ever “live broadcast breakfast review”. Sounded like an awesome idea to me, so we quickly headed outside and down the block…
As I said, Bagel Island is just a short walk from the studio, and is located right in the heart of Historic Uptown Marysville. I think we might have been the first customers of the day, as we got there just after they opened at 8:30 AM, but that was ok with owner, Lauralynn Stephen. As we entered, she was standing at the counter with a big smile, waiting to help us. She was extremely friendly and welcoming.
The shop was a cute little place with lots of natural brick and stylish hardwood. There were palms, tropical flowers and accenting artwork on the walls, which all tied in nicely with the tropical or island theme of the restaurant. The front of the house is used for seating, and the order counter, menu wall and kitchen are all situated in the rear. I was really impressed with how cozy it felt inside.
Angie sent us to retrieve bagels, and bagels are what we got. As we explained to Lauralynn why we were there, she graciously and generously offered us three complimentary bagels, slathered with some of their signature cream cheese to try. They generally offer around 10 different bagel flavors to choose from, and sometimes feature special flavors, too.
We ordered three of the Cinnamon Raisin Bagels w/ Pumpkin Pecan Cream Cheese. It was incredible!! All of their cream cheese flavors are made from Lauralynn’s own recipes, and she makes each one in-house, using all natural ingredients.
The extended menu at Bagel Island obviously focuses on their amazing bagels and delightful cream cheeses. When we visited, there were bagel offerings such as Asiago, Jalapeno Cheddar, Black Russian, Cranberry, and more. All of their bagels are New York-style water bagels, meaning they’re boiled before they are baked, which is the only way to go when it comes to good bagels. Their cream cheeses come in a variety of flavors as well, and can be purchased by the tub, to take home for later.
In addition, Bagel Island serves a variety of bagel sandwiches. They have a breakfast sandwich that you can customize with your choice of meat, cheese, and bagel flavor, as well as some unique lunch options, using fresh deli meats and veggies. All of their sandwiches, and other products, are made using local and organic products, when available.
We returned to the studio and the three of us absolutely demolished our donated breakfast on-air (NOM NOM NOM). The bagel was light, chewy and delicious, and the cream cheese was some the best I’ve had.
There are so many things to try at Bagel Island, and unfortunately for me, I just didn’t have time to do it during this trip. I’ve been meaning to return to sample some of their other items, as I’ve heard that their “Kaaale Yeah Smoothie” was the first kale smoothie in Union Country, and is incredibly good. You can bet I’ll be back to try it soon!!
Bagel Island is located at 117 E. 5th St, Marysville, OH 43040 (Map). Their hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 3:30 PM, and Saturday, 8:30 AM – 2:00 PM. If you’d like more info, you can check out their website, or their Facebook page.
