Yeah, Me Too – Columbus, OH

It’s hard to imagine in today’s world, that a successful business could operate with absolutely no form of advertising, whatsoever: No website. No Twitter handle or Facebook page. No banner ads. No local radio or TV spots. Not even a Yellow Pages ad, for Pete’s sake! If I were a betting man, I would say that that business was destined to fail…fast. But that’s precisely the way that Jovan Karcic and Sam Brown have run their small coffee shop in Clintonville for years. Relying solely on word of mouth and the thirst of the casual passerby, Yeah, Me Too is one of Columbus’ best kept secrets.

But just because Yeah, Me Too doesn’t advertise, doesn’t mean that people aren’t talking about them. Review sites like Yelp are lighting up with dozens of praise reports for this small shop at the corner of Indianola Ave. and Weber Rd. In fact, many of the customers on these review sites tout this place as serving one of the best cups of coffee in Columbus! Although I’d driven by many times, I had never stopped in to try their java, so I decided to check them out on a recent Saturday morning, to experience for myself the service and product of Yeah, Me Too…

The tiny shop wasn’t much bigger on the inside than my living room is. The space consists of a small standing/ordering area, a funky, wood-planked counter, and the behind-the-counter area. That’s it. No tables, no chairs, no big menu boards. In fact, Yeah, Me Too serves no food, and has only two kinds of coffee – hot and iced. They are a cash only business, so make sure you hit up the ATM, or your couch cushions, before you go. When I arrived, I was greeted with a half-smile by Jovan, who was sitting behind the counter. He was friendly, but not talkative. He politely answered a couple of questions that I asked about the place, and briefly told me about their history. And that was it. He poured me a large cup (they offer small, large and extra large sizes) of the only coffee they were serving, directly from a French press, I paid him, and that was that.

Several of the reviews I read online were by folks who were a little put off by the lack of interaction the shop owner offers. I didn’t really mind. It’s pretty clear that he prefers to limit the talk to coffee, and that was ok with me. If you’re the kind of person who likes to chat, just be aware that you might not be in for a meaningful conversation.

He did give me permission to snap a few photos of his shop. The large, antique-looking roaster was a nice focal point in the front of the house. It was clean and presented well. I’m not sure if it’s used daily, or maybe they just do a couple of larger batches for the entire week, or whatever. Either way, it was great that they have it right out front for customers to see.

The opposite wall was filled with a variety of art by local artists. The artwork really worked to brighten up the room, as a contrast to the otherwise plain-looking walls. There was also a narrow shelf with condiments, which was nice.

Although the building doesn’t compare to the trendy, casual coffee shops just blocks away, the one thing that Yeah, Me Too has going for it is their coffee. I ordered the Large Coffee ($2.50), and much to my anticipation based on the reviews I read, it was absolutely incredible. It was earthy and fruity, clean, and had very little to no bitterness or aftertaste. Now, I must warn you…if you come here looking for a raspberry mochachino with a double shot of foo-foo, you’re going to be disappointed. But, if you’re looking for simply one of the best cups of coffee in town, I think this just may be the spot. They also sell beans by the pound, so if you’re looking for some to take home, Jovan or Sam can hook you up with several varieties.

Bottom line – if you like the variety of Starbucks, or the trendy coffee shop vibe, and are looking for a place to sit on the couch, sip a yuppie drink, and use the free Wi-Fi, then Yeah, Me Too is definitely not the place for you. But if you simply want a big cup of really, really good coffee, with no hassle, no fuss, and no frills, check out Yeah, Me Too in Clintonville. You will definitely not be disappointed.

I love this place but I will warn you as a quasi-regular customer that they aren’t always open at exactly 7:00 am. So, leave yourself some slack if you’re on a tight schedule. I’d plan closer to 7:20 to be on the safe side.
