For the last post from my recent Memphis trip, I thought we’d finish off the weekend with some good, old-fashioned donuts! Millington Donuts is located along Hwy 51, right on the outskirts of town, and from what I could tell, is actually one of the only real donut spots in the area (Millington is about 15 miles North of Memphis, and I was too lazy to drive any further). Sure, there are a couple of grocery stores, and a Walmart if you’re really desperate…but I’m talking about the kind of place where all they do is house-made donuts at a genuine, gotta-get-there-early-because-they-sell-out-by-noon donut shop.
Millington Donuts is a simple shop, really. Not a lot of hype or hoopla, just a space big enough for some donut counters and cases, a couple of coolers for milk, fruit juices and other drinks, a coffee maker, and they’re good to go.
We almost missed out on donuts on this particular morning – we arrived at around 10:30am and it was apparent that they had already had a busy Saturday morning, since most of their selection had already been pretty well picked over. Millington Donuts is the kind of donut place that fries up a certain number for the day, and when they’re gone (or close to it), they close up shop. It was good to see that even for as late in the morning as it was, there were still several other customers that were seeking out delicious donuts just like I was. I love seeing local folks supporting local businesses right up until closing time!!
I went ahead and ordered a dozen donuts ($6.89) from what was left, to take with me to a family gathering we were on our way to. The lady behind the counter cheerfully helped me with my selections. I got a decent mix of some glazed donuts, crullers, maple & strawberry iced, blueberry, apple “filled”, and she even threw in an extra glazed donut and some holes. Score!!
I have to be honest and admit that I probably ate more than my share of these dudes, but my favorites were the apple-filled and the classic glazed donuts. These delicious treats were very light and airy, and the sugar glaze had just the right amount of sweetness.
The family really enjoyed the desserts from this simple little shop, just as much as if I would have driven into the city for “big-name” donuts. It’s proof that you don’t have to have the fanciest, most glamorous location or things like trendy décor and unique architecture – your products are what people will come back for.
If you’re in town, stop by and support this local shop. Let somebody else buy the Walmart donuts.
